Debbie has lived in four different states in her life. Kentucky is her state of birth however she was raised in a small home in Indiana in the big city of Indianapolis. There is where she met and married her high school sweet heart while they were attending college at Purdue University. Her first child was born in 1974, a beautiful baby girl. But the blessings were not over! Their second child was born in 1978 and again they had another beautiful baby girl.
Life was a bit rough during the early 1980’s and her husband was laid off from work and unable to locate employment. During that time you couldn’t even get a job at McDonalds! But they were survivors. Not about to let this time get them down John, her husband, began looking for work in other states. This led to a job in Oregon. He began work in Oregon and over the next 6 months Debbie finalized the sale of their home and planned to join him. During his time in Oregon he was offered a job in Alaska. Having always wanted to go to Alaska it was a dream come true for him. So, change of plans. Rolling with the punches off Debbie went with nothing but clothes, a TV for the girls, and the all so necessary microwave.
As you can imagine life in Alaska was much different than the city life Debbie had been raised in. But after a very short period of time she discovered that she not only loved being in Alaska and all it had to offer, she actually thrived during her time there. Learning new things was never daunting to Debbie so hiking, camping, hunting, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, and four wheeling were things she never would have gotten to do in the big city. The two girls also became proficient at all the above as well.
But as children do, they grew up. Both eventually moved to the ‘lower 48’ as Alaskans call it. They began their own lives and Debbie and John became grandparents! The joy of that was indescribable. The opportunity arose for Debbie and John to move to the same city as the grandchildren. Of course that was an opportunity that wasn’t going to get missed. So off they went to the beautiful city of Raleigh, NC. Though NC is nothing at all like Alaska, it has a beauty all of its own. The ability to be at, within a three hour drive, the seaside or the mountains is a big draw for many people and so it was for Debbie. And all the lush greenery. In Alaska the trees are scrawny because of the short growing season. And the southern charm of the locals was so sweet.
The big change was moving, but another big change would be employment. Something she had thought about as a young mother was going in to real estate but life had taken her a different direction. This was a second opportunity to make that dream a reality. She was licensed in 2008 and in the first 6 months in the business she sold as many homes as the average agent sells in one year.
Helping people had always been her way. In Alaska she had been an administrator of a medical clinic of three physicians, three midlevel providers, lab, x-ray, minor surgery, was on the IVF team and was the patient representative. In addition there were twenty two other employees, mostly women. Among all those duties she also became the in-house counselor for the employees and physicians, the office machinery repair person, and overall problem solver which suit her personality to a tee. So the transition to real estate was a snap in that regards. Helping people, check. Problem solver, check. People person, check. Great listener, check.
In her spare time Debbie loves to make quilts. This hobby began in Alaska as well as doing all sorts of crafts. She also enjoys, movies, boating, reading, and recently learned to scuba dive! She doesn’t like to exercise though…..but if she must the gym is where she heads.
